What is art therapy?

An art therapy session in progress

While art can be fun, it’s also a powerful tool for emotional and cognitive processing. Art therapy combines creative expression with psychology, offering a different and often more accessible way to understand and work through complex issues.

Using materials like paint, clay, pencils and collage, clients are invited into a sensory experience that often reveals hidden emotional states. The creative process engages sight, touch, sound and even smell, making it especially helpful for anyone who finds talk therapy limiting.

An art therapist guides that process, helping clients uncover meaning, regulate emotion, and build strategies for resilience. The result is empowerment through self-awareness.
